Piano Teacher Forum: "Music through Music: Learning through the Senses"
The Suzuki Method is the Mother Tongue Approach. Let's reflect on how children learn their Language. We don't explain the language to them or describe to them how to produce the sounds or how to inflect their voices. Children learn to speak by hearing the language spoken by absorbing through their senses and by developing their intuition. They hear and speak. It is this amazing natural process that allows the children to gain fluency and be able to express themselves with ease. When we develop this same way of learning in music, music will become their language. Teach music through music.
Saturday, March 27, 7-10pm EDT
Reading Course for Teachers: "Music Reading: Joyful and Natural"
Through examples and teacher participation, Caroline Fraser will demonstrate a natural and joyful approach to music reading where children learn by absorbing and "doing," using their already well-trained ears. Learning music reading in the Suzuki style means that musical notation will grow naturally out of the children's playing abilities and not treated as a separate subject, allowing the children's discovery of the written language to evolve directly from their own experiences.
Sunday, March 28, 4-6pm EDT
Parent / Teacher / Alumni Lecture: "Let the Children Learn!"
Have faith in the power of the environment. Instead of feeding the children all the answers, guide them towards self-discovery and they will develop self-confidence, high self-esteem and the ability to problem solve. Throughout childhood and as adults, this skill and these attitudes will serve them well!
Options:
- For parents / Suzuki alumni - Parent/Teacher Lecture (Sun)
- For teachers of all instruments - Reading Course (Sat) and/or Lecture (Sun); Fri piano teacher session is open to all instrument teachers
- For piano teachers - all three days, or pick and choose
SAGWA is offering free registration to Caroline Fraser's Lecture "Let the Children Learn!" to Suzuki alumni. Teachers, be sure to let your former students, recent high school and college graduates know about this wonderful opportunity!
